How It Works

01 — Tap or press space

One button, two inputs

Click the big tap button, or press Space anywhere on the page. Both register the same way. Tap in time with the song you want to detect — quarter notes are the most natural choice, but you can tap any consistent subdivision and use the Half / Double card to find the right tempo value.

02 — Rolling average

Self-correcting math

The tool keeps your last eight tap intervals in a window and averages them every tap. Old sloppy taps fall out of the window as you continue, so the BPM converges quickly on the real tempo. Stop tapping for 2.5 seconds and the window auto-clears so you can pick up a new tempo without hitting Reset.

03 — Visual metronome

Confirm before you trust it

Once a BPM is detected, the visual metronome locks to that tempo. Watch the pulse for ten seconds — if it feels right against the song you tapped, you've got the BPM. The visual is driven by the same Web Audio scheduler as the optional audio click, so they stay perfectly synced.

04 — Audio click for DAW work

Use it as a metronome too

Toggle the audio click on and the visual metronome doubles as a basic practice metronome — a sharp 1500 Hz tick on every beat. The audio scheduler uses a 100ms lookahead on the Web Audio timeline so beats land exactly where they should, even if your browser tab is in the background.

Tap Tempo FAQ

How accurate is the BPM detection?
Very accurate after about four taps. The tool takes a rolling average of your last eight tap intervals and recomputes BPM every tap, so the more taps you give it, the more it smooths out human timing noise. With steady tapping at 120 BPM the readout typically settles within about 0.5 BPM of the true tempo by the fourth or fifth tap.
How many taps before the reading stabilizes?
Two taps give you a number, four taps give you a reliable number, and eight taps fill the rolling window with fresh data. If your first couple of taps were off, the stale data falls out of the window as you continue, so the reading self-corrects. The Stability indicator under the BPM display tells you how consistent your last several taps were — anything above 70% is usable.
What if I'm tapping the wrong note value (half or double tempo)?
The Half / Double card in the stats row shows the BPM at half and twice the detected tempo. If you tapped to the backbeat instead of the downbeat, or tapped eighth notes instead of quarters, glance at that card and pick the value that matches the genre. A song that feels like 120 BPM is unlikely to actually be 60 or 240, so the right answer is usually obvious from feel.
Why does my BPM keep changing as I tap?
Because human tapping isn't perfectly even — that's the rolling average doing its job. Each new tap adjusts the average slightly. If you tap for ten or twelve seconds steadily, the number converges on the true tempo. If the BPM is jumping by more than a couple of BPM with each tap, the Stability indicator will show under 70% — slow down, find the pulse, and try again.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. The big tap button is sized for touch and the touchstart handler fires immediately so there's no synthetic-click delay. Audio click track also works on mobile after the first tap (browsers require a user gesture to start audio, which the first tap provides).
Can I use keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. Press Space or Enter anywhere on the page to register a tap. The tool ignores keypresses while focus is on a text input, so other controls don't interfere. Repeated keys (holding down the key) only register once, so you can't game the BPM by holding Space.
How is the audio click kept in sync with the visual?
Both the audio click and the visual pulse are driven by a single Web Audio scheduler using a 100ms lookahead. The audio click is precisely scheduled on the AudioContext timeline, and the visual flash is fired by a setTimeout aimed at the same scheduled time. They stay locked together rather than drifting independently — which is what would happen if the visual were on a CSS animation loop and the audio were on its own clock.
